The Texas Center for Legal Ethics mourns the loss of its co-founder, former Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Jack Pope. Chief Justice Pope died on February 25 at the age of 103. As a member of the 4th Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Texas, and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he pioneered the promulgation of judicial canons of ethics in Texas.
As a distinguished Texas lawyer and then as a legendary trial and appellate judge, Jack Pope exemplified the highest standards of professional ethics. In his honor, TCLE presents the Chief Justice Jack Pope Professionalism Award annually to a Texas appellate lawyer or appellate judge who epitomizes the highest level of professionalism and integrity.
