Crowds Cheering for Lawyers? Not Something You See Every Day
Back to all blog posts
Lawyers are suddenly popular? That’s the somewhat unlikely headline in a recent article about the large numbers of lawyers who are flocking to airports across the country to offer free legal assistance to travelers detained at airports because of the recent Executive Order signed by President Trump. In fact, travelers were chanting “thank you, lawyers! Thank you, lawyers!” to the members of the legal profession at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C.
Closer to home, lawyers are doing the same thing. Attorneys in Houston and Dallas, among other places, have headed to local airports and set up shop, providing free legal services to those caught up in the chaos. Texas lawyers are even contributing large sums of money in addition to their time to help defray the costs of representing travelers, some of whom have been detained for hours at a time.
The idea of lawyers getting together to help out those in need is nothing new. It doesn’t, however, usually get this much attention. And it certainly doesn’t result in chants of support from spontaneous crowds. Regardless of one’s political view of the situation, no one should disagree that everyone deserves legal representation when they need it. And that these lawyers are doing exactly what they should be doing to ensure that the Judicial Branch works the way it is supposed to.

About This Blog
Thanks for stopping by On the Merits, the first blog from the Texas Center for Legal Ethics. On the Merits will take a close look at significant legal stories with an eye toward addressing the legal myths and misconceptions that turn up in news stories, movies, TV programs, websites, anonymous emails and other forms of mass communications. Our goal at On the Merits is to provide readers with a thoughtful examination of what the media and others are saying about the legal profession and to apply the frequently-absent context of how the legal system actually works.
