Honoring His Honor

Today one of the most beloved figures in the Texas legal profession turned 100 years old.  Chief Justice Jack Pope -- a giant of the profession and widely respected for his jurisprudence, his long service on the bench, his many contributions to the profession, and his sterling character -- was born on April 18, 1913.  Chief Justice Pope was honored today with a standing ovation in the Texas House of Representatives surrounded by the current members of the Texas Supreme Court and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.  Simply put, he represents everything good and decent about the legal profession, and he continues to inspire us all.

About This Blog

Thanks for stopping by On the Merits, the first blog from the Texas Center for Legal Ethics. On the Merits will take a close look at significant legal stories with an eye toward addressing the legal myths and misconceptions that turn up in news stories, movies, TV programs, websites, anonymous emails and other forms of mass communications. Our goal at On the Merits is to provide readers with a thoughtful examination of what the media and others are saying about the legal profession and to apply the frequently-absent context of how the legal system actually works.
