What’s better than a lawyer getting a wrongfully-convicted man freed from prison? That same man becoming a lawyer and using his law license to work to free others who are wrongfully imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.

Lawyers are suddenly popular? That’s the somewhat unlikely headline in a recent article about the large numbers of lawyers who are flocking to airports across the country to offer free legal assistance to travelers detained at airports because of the recent Executive Order signed by President Trump.

Our legal system is not perfect, and it is rightly criticized when it falls short. But we too often overlook the genius of the Founding Fathers when they gave us the then-radical idea of separation of powers and an independent judiciary. Judicial independence is so woven into the national fabric that people rarely think about how remarkable it is.

Tensions between U.S. law enforcement and the public have been running high for some time, culminating recently with several high-profile shootings by police officers and the recent deadly attacks against police in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Some police departments have responded by implementing novel programs aimed at helping bridge their gap with communities, including a recent videotaped exchange between a driver and an officer in Halifax, Virginia, that has gone viral.
