Skip Watson of Austin to receive annual honor

8/13/2019

The Texas Center for Legal Ethics is proud to announce that Charles “Skip” Watson of Austin will receive the 2019 Chief Justice Jack Pope Professionalism Award.

Each year, the Texas Center for Legal Ethics presents the Pope Award to a judge or attorney who personifies the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in appellate law. The Pope Award is named for former Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Jack Pope, one of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics’ founders and the first individual to receive the Award in 2009.

Watson is an appellate attorney with Greenberg Traurig in Austin. A Fellow in the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, he chaired the State Bar of Texas Appellate Section committee that drafted the Texas Standards of Appellate Conduct. Watson also serves on the Texas Supreme Court’s Rules Advisory Committee.

“Skip Watson is, quite simply, one of the most honorable and ethical lawyers I have ever worked with, against, or around,” said Houston appellate attorney Kevin Dubose, himself a recipient of the Pope Award in 2012. “I have never heard of anyone having an unpleasant experience or relationship with Skip, and that is rare for any lawyer.”

The Pope Award will be presented to Watson by Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht at the Annual Texas Supreme Court Historical Society Dinner on Sept. 6 in Austin.

Founded in 1989 by Chief Justice Pope and two other retired Texas Supreme Court chief justices, the Texas Center for Legal Ethics promotes the values contained in the Texas Lawyer’s Creed and fulfills its founders’ vision to be the leading center of knowledge and resources for ethics and professionalism in Texas.
